Identify Object with Sterling Corners, Backwards N

I have this object that I can't identify. The corners are beautiful and marked Sterling, but the N is backwards. Does anyone have any ideas or info on this object? My best guess is a deskpad sample. There are no pockets, just flat leather and flat cloth on the inside.

The spine seems to indicate it should enclose something. But Grandma's photo-I think not. So...Wine list? 2 cards-one for red, one for white. That's an interesting guess Traintime, but I didn't include the measurements. 4 1/8" by 3" open. Wine list or menu holder "sample"???

Welcome to the Forum.

Looks like an aide-memoire, a kind of notebook where you would slip a piece of paper under the four corners. They were often used for ladies dance-cards etc.. Earlier versions of similar devices were known as 'ballspendes' or 'court plasters', these earlier pieces used ivory panels instead of paper.

Thanks to the both of you! Does the backwards "N" in the word sterling suggest a time or maker to you?

To me, it's the sort of thing that may have made by Unger Brothers.
