This is an item I picked up in an op shop recently. Simply because I found it to be an interesting object. I asked a couple of elderly ladies, while in the store, what it might be used for. But sadly they had no idea. So here I am.

I can't make out the mark. The item could be a butter dish, it certainly looks like one.
