WHAT IS THIS INTERESTING BOX?

Postby niceguy1 » Thu Nov 13, 2014 10:25 pm

HI

What is this piece? The box is hallmarked for Goldsmiths & Silversmiths London 1904 & opens up to reveal two foldable handles on the left & a plated insert on the right which is marked E.P PARIS which unscrews to unveil two white chalk-like pieces.

THANK YOU

Many thanks for that. Why was chalk used instead of cloth wick?

Probably the wicks are made of asbestos, which lasted more.
