Antique silver mystery item, London 1925

Postby niceguy1 » Thu Aug 01, 2013 1:10 pm

HI ALL GOOD PEOPLE

I have this silver mystery object which i can't figure out, it's round with a lever on the side which opens a "trapdoor" is the center which opens up downwards.

I think the hallmark says C. B. & sons, although i cannot find a exact match on this site or on the silvermakersmark site i think it might perhaps be Charles Boyton & Sons. the year letter is k for 1925. The side is marked 3029 Patent 558 or 358.

What was this used for? is it part of something or on its own?

THANKS.

I have no idea what it is, but the sponsor's mark is GB&SONS for George Betjemann & Sons.

HI PHIL

Yes it matches perfectly with his mark on your site. thanks for that.

Is there any way to look up what this is by the patent number?

Just a guess--it looks like the top piece of a receptacle for cigarette butts and pipe ashes.

That thought would fit in nicely, George Betjemann & Sons, were known suppliers to Alfred Dunhill.

I was going to guess it was something tobacco related as well. The bar on the top seems a nice place to rest a cigarette. The piece seems a little beat up and maybe missing a piece or something?
