From a 1913 retailer's advertisement: a 6½" (16.5cm) sterling pierced spoon-type item, in Towle's Mary Chilton pattern. Can't recall seeing this piece in any other catalog or ad, and not really sure that it would be particularly effective for its stated purpose...

As a guess, it might be an ice spoon.

Is that clue with the "spoon type item" description? Is this something that was dragged across a food and collected in the bowl?

It was not described as a 'spoon' in the ad, it was intended for use with something edible, but not as a strainer...

Maybe almonds or other nuts, bon bons if that has not already been suggested or is it something very unique?

If I've seen one in 'real life', wouldn't have recognized it...the ad is the only one I've run across. Suspect the piercing was done on a cream soup spoon, as the proportions would be about the same...

I see this same piercing on a seven inches long piece in the Lafayette pattern that is up for sale, but that wouldn't necessarily change the purpose. I'm out of guesses.

Closest I can find in my flatware service is a sugar sifter... and it is completely useless for that purpose.

Interesting that the piece silverly found is in another Towle pattern (doubt the half inch would make a difference in use) - perhaps they were the only manufacturer who came up with this particular idea...

Shall I reveal its use?

Yes, it could have stayed unidentified for years, and I would not have guessed.

Nice one Cheryl, I can see it work to make a light mayonnaise dressing were you add some lime juice, mustard and a little warm water to the mayo.
Enjoy,

Oel.
