Object with a mysterious hole in the bottom

Hello! I am trying to identify this object, its about 2X2X4″ made of gilded silver and any function I can think of is made impossible by the hole in the bottom.. I thought maybe the object might have been assimilated into something bigger? Or possibly fixed onto something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Are you sure this item is silver? If so, please post an image of the marks, as this may provide a clue.
