Unknown "Fruit Bowl"

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some in site as to what this is. I was told it is a "neff" Something used for holding and serving fruit on the table.I was told it was given to my grandfather from a soldier returning to Canada after World War 1 from England where people were selling some of there possessions. It's approximately 10' tall and 13' long.
