In Southern Europe, especially on the Iberian Peninsula, Holy water bowls, inverse as the container, in form of a halve shell are the only form I’ve seen until yet.
That’s also in remembrance to the centuries old history of Saint Jacob’s — and his symbol of a shell.
In these two countries, related to the admiration of Saint Jacob’s assistances, I guess you wouldn’t find ashtrays in form of a shell; not in the public or private.
My »thumb up« there fore is, that the item is a »Holy water bowl«.
