The purpose of this sterling case

Postby oel » Tue Dec 25, 2007 10:11 am

Merry Christmas

Who could tell me were this silver case was used for? The case has been made by Nathaniel Mills and contains two instruments. Both instruments are paper made; one has a silver tip hallmarked.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

The case itself is called an Etui, they usually contained small items such as toothpicks, needles etc., with the loop on the lid it could be used in connection with a Chatelaine, an item worn on the belt of a housekeeper, it was a clip with chains for suspending keys, scissors, aide-memoire etc.
I'm afraid the two items contained in this one, are a mystery to me.

Regards Trev.

Most of the silver etuis made by Nathaniel Mills were for people with a scientific background...so I would suggest it is probably medical.
Best wishes, Mike.

What is under the wrappings of the two internal pieces?

Thanks all of you, under the wrappings of the internal pieces is air, hollow.
The wrappings are stiff and hard, like sand paper and reach to the bottom of the etui. The internal piece without the silver tip has traces of sealing wax.
