Hi,

It's a reproduction of the spoons that were used in ancient Rome and Greece.

The maker looks like Deakin and Francis.

The notched part of the spoon is thought to be for resting on the edge of a bowl and it is generally thought that the spike was for the opening of shell fish.
Your suggestion of a use with eggs is also correct in Sir Charles Jackson's "History of English Plate" he states that when eggs were eaten, the shells were perforated with the spoons to avoid evil consequences.

thanks all

trev, i thought of boiled eggs due to the spike, i used to poke a hole in the top with a metal spike to see if they were done, if not put them back in, the boiling water used to seal the hole
