curious decoration on a Hamburg spoon

Postby R ingo » Sun Apr 03, 2011 5:36 pm

Hello,
I have an old Hamburg serving spoon from the first half of the 19th century (probably from 1820) with an interesting decoration on the end of the stem.
I would be glad, if someone can tell me something about this decoration. Is this a pure ornament or in any way functional. Where is the origin of this ornament.

Kind regards,
Ringo

Hello, I believe this to be a later addition, possibly to strengthen the back of the spoon. Best wishes, Bahner

Hello Bahner,
I thank you for your advice. Probably you are right, but the spoon is quite thick and don`t need a strengthening.

Thanks and kind regards,
Ringo
