Franz Bahner asparagus tongs

Postby jok23 » Tue Feb 23, 2010 2:37 pm

I was wondering if anyone could identify the design/designer of these asparagus tongs made by Franz Bahner. I am aware that van de Velde and Gebhard Duve designed silver for that firm - could this be by one of them? What sort of period would they date from? Thanks for your help.

it is Franz Bahner Modell 18000, designed by Gebhard Duve around 1930, also existing in a hammered version.

No-line pattern by Franz Bahner

Nope, this is not 18000 by Duve. This is a no line pattern, introduced at possibly the same time as the Duve pattern. So far I have seen of this pattern: sugar tong, cake server, asparagus server, serving spoon (for cream ?), meat fork. The quality is much lighter than 18000, probably reflecting the economically difficult times following the crash of '29. The designer is not known, though I tend to believe that this pattern follows Duve's ideas. Regards, Bahner

Hi Bahner,
Does this apply to the fork as well as the asparagus tongs?
Thanks, Tom

Sorry, that was misleading. The fish fork shown here is indeed pattern 18000 by Duve in its martelé version. The asparagus server is not. Best wishes, Bahner
