unusual pattern george adams spoons

Postby rat-tail » Sun Dec 27, 2009 3:58 am

Hi - and apologies if this is in the wrong place, but a British pattern issue, not American. Bought these four heavy (a shade under a troy ounce each) George Adams large teaspoons, dated London 1845 because the pattern appealed and it is not one I had seen before. Sort of kings without the fussiness or fiddle and thread with an extra flourish. Just enquiring if anyone had ever seen spoons of this type before, or might they have been one offs made to order. Thanks Frank

Hi Frank,

The pattern is called 'Kings Shape Double Threaded'.

Ian Pickford in his 'Silver Flatware' book, states that it is a rare pattern and notes that it is listed in the Chawner pattern book, so that fits in nicely with George Adams who was the successor to Chawners.

Trev.

Thanks Trev appreciate the info. Had forgotten that Adams took over the Chawner empire. Have some FTS Mary Chawner teaspoons that are virtually identical in all except pattern. I like the large hefty teaspoons of the late georgian, early victorian era. Firstly the oval - or should that be ovoid - bowl is back. And while they lack the hand hammered vitality of their cousins a century earlier, they have a wonderful functionality - more useful than any mustard ladle, condiment spoon, fruit, compote, egg, sugar or berry spoon or all the proliferation of small spoons. And they're great for that modern convenience - or horror some might say - the mug. Cheers frank
