Fresh Flowers & Sterling - A No No?

Postby starrj3030 » Thu Apr 21, 2011 5:48 am

Hi Everyone. I have a quick question: can you put fresh flowers in a sterling silver vessel? I know salt is damaging to it if not cleaned immediately, does the chemical make up of flowers and their stems do the same in some fashion or another? When I clean my crystal after using it as a vase, it takes quite a while to soak then scrub to remove the film and leaf litter from it, even when they haven't been in there long.

Thanks!
Starr

p.s. I searched this site and couldn't find anything pertaining to this subject.

to the best of myexperience there is no issue with flowers in silver vases. I have used one vase almost daily for quite a few years, though I do clean it completely when I change the flowers (every 3-5 days.) I would however suggest not using the "cut flower food" packet many florists give out as I am unsure what chemicals are in them.

You make a valid point about the "Fresh Flowers" solution you add to prolong the life of your flowers, and I believe you're right. There's no telling what is in that that might damage silver. I'm glad to hear that you use your silver for your flowers because I really want to.

Thank you so much for your reply.
