Silver salt pot turned black

I have been lucky enough to be left a 1950's silver and blue glass condiment set and when I removed the blue glass insert of the salt pot the inside is black. I didn't realise salt could damage silver in this way. Is there any way of cleaning this or is the damage irreparable?

I suspect when the item was polished the inside was not polished. First I would use a good polish and some elbow grease to see if it can be brought back to the proper finish. I am assuming that the piece is sterling. If it is plated it may not be possible to break the tarnish without removing the plate layer.

Thank you for your response. Yes it is sterling, hallmarked 1951. I don't know if the year makes any difference to the quality of silver.
