I've probably tried every method of cleaning silver over the years, would love to save others from making some of the mistakes I made years ago (nothing horrible, thank goodness). Jeffrey Herman of the Society of American Silversmiths has provided a very sensible and simply written guide that addresses several issues concerning the care and cleaning of silver.

Have had several friends asking me about polishing their silver for the holidays, so bumping up this link. Again - very sensible and trustworthy advise concerning appropriate methods for the care of silver.
