thick hammered sterling bowl "pau (?) 925"

Post by dogmomsk »

Hello,
I have no idea whether this is American or from some other country... trying to ID it.
It is a small, hand-crafted looking, thick sterling bowl with hammered finish. The marks are some type of graphic or symbol which I cannot ID, along with "925" and letters which look to me like they may be "PAU"?? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi ~ It's a poorly stamped "PERU".

Do you know whether the symbol is a general symbol for Peru, or indicative of some particular maker? Thanks again.

This is the mark of Truman Bailey, an American who helped to revive the Peruvian silver manufacturing industry in the post-WW II era. He incorporated pre-Columbian motifs in his work, as well as mid-century modernistic designs. The mark is a vertical B sitting on a horizontal T. Hope this adds to the enjoyment of your bowl.
