Mustard spoon mystery - where was it made?

Postby MLF » Mon Mar 05, 2007 12:57 am

I recently bought this mustard spoon, which measures 8.7 cm. The name 'Sarah' is engraved on the handle, perhaps to prevent others from devouring her precious mustard.

The spoon has some perplexing marks.

The first mark seems to be a woman's head, faced left. Then there's the letter D, and then a rubbed mark, which is probably an 'M'. What's going on here? My first instinct was to think these were pseudo marks. However, the spoon is extremely thin - as if made from sterling silver by a smith, who didn't want to waste too much silver on a small spoon like this. I have no testing kit, but the metal looks and feels like sterling (it was polished after pictures 2 and 3 were taken). The three marks are quite rubbed - was there once a fourth one with a maker's mark? Are the three exisitng marks at all compatible? Help!

I believe what you have there are American coin silver pseudo marks. The third mark looks to me like it was an Eagle.
Similar pseudo marks were most often used by silversmiths in New York State. I can't attribute these marks to just one silversmith.
Maybe someone else can.

Aha! That does make sense. Thanks for sharing your insight, Pat.

Best wishes
