Need help with a coin silver mark on a spoon T. J. Hemphill

Post by Baltimorebottles »

I recently bought a small group of coin silver spoons all with marks I haven't been able to identify.
I have 3 spoons with this mark T. J. Hemphill. Thanks for any information.

Chris

Hi,

Thomas Johnston Hemphill (1812-1878), working in Philadelphia circa 1830s to the 1860s. His mark is not commonly seen, and didn't make it into Hollan's "Philadelphia Silversmiths", which contains his available biographical information.

Best,

T.J. Hemphill was recorded as a jeweler of 806, Vine Street, Philadelphia, in Ladies Philadelphia Shopping Guide & Housekeeper's Companion for 1859.
