Coin Silver Soup Ladle w/Very Unusual Mark

Postby WesternPA » Mon Dec 28, 2015 11:29 pm

Hi,

This ladle, circa 1805-30, recently purchased on eBay, has me stumped - it came out of Pinehurst, N.C., but the monogram, midrib and overall feel seem more like inland PA to me. I've not seen a maker's mark quite like this anywhere, certainly not on American silver - and yet I am very confident this is American, though I can't rule out Canadian. Has anyone seen other pieces with this mark, or with a mark similar to this? Could this be an unknown William Haverstick mark, or someone else from inland PA? Any stray thoughts would be welcome!

Best,
WesternPA

There seems to be an error in your image posting; I don't see a photo of the mark.

Looks like is not reliable - at least some pictures get taken over by hackers!

Trev,

Are you able to delete the first picture in my initial post, which was of the mark but which got taken over by hackers?

Thanks!

Hi,

I could only see the the original 'WH' mark image, but just in case you, or others, can see something different, then I've replaced that image with the new one.

Thanks Trev - I should note that a spoon with this mark is in the Winterthur collection, available online. That spoon is a pointed-end, PA style spoon, but that doesn't definitively establish much. It does seem this mystery silversmith might have been around for a decade or more, though!
