Here we go. All I can make out is a B........L. There might be an A in there somewhere.

It's just too out of focus. In the first shot the first letter appears to be an H, in the next a B. Your shooting in artificial light then leaning over the fork which creates a shadow.

Try shooting in indirect day light filtered through a drap. Use the macro setting on your camera. Lay the fork on a textured material, may help to focus the lense further. Try leaning from the left in one shot then the right for the next to see if the lense will pick up any of the very faint details. Then just keep trying, you'll get it. If you have the capacity to crop, enlarge, and sharpen the image.

Considering the length of the cartouche you may be looking at two words (names) at the least.

There is a period after the H and it appears to end in LL period. Was seeing a G instead of a C. So it's actually
H. COGSWELL.
