fur trade silver

Postby trevorg » Sat Jul 26, 2014 11:13 am

Hello,
I have a silver cross in the shape of the cross of lorraine which I believe was made as an item for the early fur trade. The cross measures 8cms x 4 cms and is engraved and marked on both sides with GF in an oval punch, the bottom serif of the F appears to be elongated. There is evidence of what I assume was a top suspension loop but which is now missing. I am no expert on early North American silver but the research I have done leads me to George Fielding (1705-1780) of New York as being the maker of this item. I would welcome the views and advice of the forum on this.
Regards,
Trevor

Hi Trevor,

It does seem a good match for George Fielding's mark.

See: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... 195186.htm
