Coin Silver Spoon with a Really UNUSUAL mark!

Postby kelmel » Mon Mar 20, 2006 11:06 pm

Hi All,

I have this spoon with a really unusual mark. I have included photos but the mark is a little hard to read. I am afraid my camera is not the best.
This spoon has a lion engraved on the end of the back of the handle. The handle has two marks on the back. The first rectangle has the letters, "SK". The second rectangle reads, "11.OZ". This spoon is heavy and is shaped just like an older coin silver spoon.
Any help is deeply appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
kelmel

Baltimore was one of the few cities (possibly the only city) in America with an assay office for locally made silver items, it opened in 1814, one year before Kirk's arrival in the city. The sterling standard had earlier been defined as "11 oz. 2 dwt. of silver per troy pound", hence the 11oz mark as a designation for silver purity.

Here's some more information on the Baltimore Assay Office marks.
