My belief is that the year was significant to the purchaser of the spoon. The year engraved on the front of the handle seems unlikely to have meant anything to Johnson or the engraver unless it was for their own use. It's a mystery that will probably remain just that unless there is documentation some where to show otherwise. Personally, I think it's a plus to have any information at all on the spoon even if it cannot be explained.
