J Johnson Pics

Hello my name is ess and would like to ask question about Mr Johnson.My research has a Jonathan Burr Johnson as a buffer in 1850,the spoon has a mark J Johnson and on the handle has a date of 1852 could this be a salesman sample or makers sample? Thanks for any help will send picks soon.

Jonathan Johnson was a watchmaker and jeweller in Lowell, Massachusetts in the correct time frame for your spoon.

Sadly, no. Anything that I would suggest would be a guess; I don't have anything unique to recommend.

could the date be a sample of his work for he was listed as a buffer on the 1850 census and spoon maker on 1870 census

My belief is that the year was significant to the purchaser of the spoon. The year engraved on the front of the handle seems unlikely to have meant anything to Johnson or the engraver unless it was for their own use. It's a mystery that will probably remain just that unless there is documentation some where to show otherwise. Personally, I think it's a plus to have any information at all on the spoon even if it cannot be explained.

I can only say that Jonathan B Johnson was listed as a burnisher in Wallingford in the 1850 and 1860 census's. My priority at this point would have to be to someday find a documented example of any J Johnson mark, especially the one in Lowell.

Someone may come across this thread that can add more to it. In the meantime good luck with your research.
