colclazer silver spoon,unknown marks

Postby jcmurp » Tue Aug 02, 2011 9:23 pm

I have looked for this maker and have looked through allot of marks and not sure if this is the right forum to post in If not please correct me. It is marked COLCLAZER and has three marks on it near the neck at the spoon bowl.
Any ideas on this maker or marks?
Any history appreciated
Thanks

Hello.

That's one of Albert Coles marks. Check here:

COLCLAZER was probably the retailer.

There is a listing in the 1872 Indianapolis, Indiana city directory for Jacob H Colclazer watches and jewelry 14 E Washington. He may be the retailer.

Colclazer seems a fairly unusual surname, so suspect that Jacob H. (1843-77) was most likely the retailer. Though I've usually seen the mark as "J.H. COLCLAZER", the 1872 ad below refers the the store as "COLCLAZER'S" - certainly no reason that both marks wouldn't have been used.

That helps allot. Thanks for everything. I had found that name colclazer in a search but did not find any other info. So this would date to the earlier date of the store more then likely right? Again thanks, Any ideas of the pattern name or type of spoon it is ? I was thinking sugar spoon

You don't mention a size, but it looks a teaspoon to me - with the twist engraved style and its being coin rather than sterling, 1860s dating rather than 1870s is a good possibility. Don't know how long the store was in business, but given Colclazer's age, service in the Union Army, and early death - suspect the window was fairly small, maybe a decade or so, though there is the possibility that his widow continued the business.

Oh yeah forgot the measurements
well it is 5 and 1/2 inches long and the spoon part is about 1 inch wide and approx 2 inches long (where the spoon meets the handle)
thanks
