Shell Teaspoons

Post by bstaunto »

Hi everyone,

Well after 0/3 in my last posts, hopefully someone can help me with this one!

These are some teaspoons I recently acquired. As you can see, they have the leopards head, kings head and then a strange third mark (maybe a bird?). I assume they must be colonial, but can't find anything similiar anywhere.

Any help is appreciated,

Ben

Hi Ben,

If you use the seach facility in this forum, using the word 'eagle', it should produce some thoughts on this mark.

The marks on your spoons appear to be pseudo-hallmarks. Here are some links to a couple of threads addressing this:

Though there is an amazing amount of American pseudo-hallmarked coin silverware running about, there is very little information associating these oft recurrent sets of marks to specific manufacturers. I have no idea as to whether there were also such markings done where you are located. Best guess is that the pieces are American coin silver (~.900 fine) made in sometime the first half of the nineteenth century by an as yet unidentified maker.
