Could these be Cape

Postby rat-tail » Thu Nov 18, 2010 4:48 pm

Hi - appealing for help with these silver teaspoons with psuedo marks. They are in large in size and in an unusual variant of the queens pattern. My first thought was Cape - they were bought in Cape Town - but am not sure that cape silversmiths did anything in queens pattern. Presume they are early Victorian. Marks look like H&Bin and American style jagged cartouche, a mock duty mark, a backwards lion passant and the letter D. I've had a look through my limited Cape resources, and the forum's Indian colonial marks, but nothing jumps out. I suppose could be Canadian as well. - Many thanks Frank

I have a vague memory of seeing either Kings or Queens pattern pieces marked by L H Twentyman but they must have been a rarity and, like you, I cannot see likely candidates in the Cape for your marks - so no real help from me I fear.

Hi Agphile - many thanks - interesting to know kings pattern has been noted from a cape smith. The only other thought I had was perhaps American, but to me it would seem strange that at least 50 years after the American Revolution an American silversmith would use English pseudos. But possible. Then there's Australia of which I know next to nothing - silver wise that is. - Thanks Frank

Hi Frank,

I think it is likely that they are American. I'll move the post to the Coin Silver section and hopefully we will get a response.

Regards Trev.
