Irish American Spoon?

Postby dognose » Fri Jul 10, 2009 4:42 pm

Hi,

I'm really stumped on this spoon, I couldn't even think where to post it, but we'll start here, and maybe move it later on.

We have here what at first looks like a fairly regular American table spoon, but the marks tell a maybe different story.

I guess what we have here is a set of top quality Irish pseudo marks for 1811, they are actually much better than they photograph, if they were on a regular Irish made spoon I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I've never come across Irish pseudo marks before, English pseudos I can understand, they were known the world over, but Irish, if presuming this spoon was made within a decade or so of that it is purported to be, would not have that well known outside of Ireland, with the exception of ex-pats. So was it the Irish immigrant market that Mr Stoddard was aiming for in America? Or maybe the marks are genuine and the spoons made for the American market.

Wev's site only lists one Stoddard, one Elisha Mason Stoddard, he was American born as were his parents, with no obvious Irish connection.

Thoughts, suggestions, corrections, anything appreciated.

Trev.

Hi,

McGrew's "Manufacturers' marks on American Coin Silver" shows this mark on page 49 - the complete hallmark, "P, Hibernia, Harp, Bust". He attributes it to Noah Stoddard working between 1826 & 1847, watchmaker & jeweller - New York City.

Regards

Hi Graham,

Many thanks for that. A mystery (to me) solved!
