American Silver Spoon J&IC Mark

Postby ronenros » Tue Feb 19, 2008 5:20 pm

I believe that this is an American Spoon, but have been unable to find the maker's mark anywhere.
Any help would be appreciated!

My books show that mark being used by John and James Cox of New York City beginning in 1817.
Believe the firm became J & J Cox & Clark around 1831-33.

Hi Pat,

Thanks a lot for the information! Could you tell me which book that information might have come from?

You're welcome. Here's a few inexpensive books on American coin silver that contain that mark.
Stephen Ensko's "American Silversmiths and Their Marks", Kovels, and an old book "Silver & Pewter marks" by C. Jordan Thorn.
The scan of marks below came from C. Jordan Thorn's book.

Here's a tea service that John and James Cox made, it's in the Brooklyn museum:

Once again, thank you very much!
