Mystery belt buckle

Post by rustyspoon »

Hello!

I have this sterling belt buckle, antique, I'd say 1920s. The only mark on back is S.M.
I am not sure if it's Chinese or Japanese, been looking at hieroglyphics for awhile and can not recognize this stylized form. if someone can help me identify the language or the mark, that would be great!

Hi Mike,

In the absence of any other suggestions, there was an undocumented silversmith working in Canton, who was known to use the mark 'S.M.' His working period is thought to be c.1840 to c.1880.

Although your mark differs from the examples that I have seen, it is likely several punches were used over a period of time.

Only offering this as a route for further research.
