I recently bought an antique gold engagement ring for my fiancee which is a gold ring set with demantoid garnets and small diamonds.
The ring has two marks:
- a capital D in a lozenge (diamond shape with four equal sides); and
- what appears to be two capital "Z"s, lightly stamped and with the middle stroke almost vertical rather than angled.
The lozenge shape suggests that this is a French makers mark. However, there is no Guarantee mark; this could have been obliterated when the ring was made smaller.
The two "Z"s could be a date mark.
Can anybody tell me whether this is a French ring, who the maker was, and what date it was made?
