Helping with Polish 583 weird hallmark

Post by Ajzyk »

I need help with this weird hallmark.
I know the polish hallmarks with the head facing right / left and eras BUT this one is with "583" - and not the "3" with the head warrior as most polish hallmarks are.

anyone know what so unique with this hallmark and its era? pre- 1986?

HI,
POZNAN, 1997- 2004. (14 K).There is confusion and inconsistency, though. Every standard was marked in millsimal units: 750, 500, 375, 333, except for number 3 for 585 which is hard to explain.

Thank you SO much as always you're giving me answers and its most appriciated.
I knows the gold polish hallmarks with the warrior head right / left and the shapre pre-60 and between the WW1 and WW2 and the Warrior head + 3 or warrior head + 4 etc.. its very uncommon my knowledge to use the soviet hallmark system of 583 and not 585 or "3" made me wonder.

Why ex soviet country that didnt like the soviet occupation that much will implimant the soviet regin hallmark of 583 as 6 years after the fall of the soviet countries.

Any thoughts on that?

Cheers!!!!

Strictly speaking,if you calculate 24 K as 1000, then 14 K will be 583.333 %.
There is actually no difference bitween 58.5% and 58.3% purity.

Hi,

No not imported from USSR. Poland domestic gold hallmarks 1986-2004. In March 1986, the hallmarks underwent another revision in both fineness designation and frame shape. All gold standards were now uniformly hallmarked in rectangular frames with cut-corners. The core image of the knight in traditional Hussar helmet facing left. The single -digit standard numbers, used from 1920 to 1986, were changed to a fineness expressed in thousandths. ; 1st standard 960, 2nd standard 750, 3rd standard 583, 4th standard 500, 5th standard 375, and 6th standard or the stork or wedding band mark 333. In this period, the assay office identification letter appears above the gold fineness to the left of the knight's head. The P is for the city of Poznań - 1962 to date.
In July 1996, the 3rd standard of 583 was raised to 585 to conform to the standard used by most other European countries.
In October 1997, the 585 hallmark was revised again after complains that the rectangular shape was too large to strike on small articles. The mark was physically reduced in size and reverted to a previously used elongated hexagonal frame-shape. The core image of the knight was moved to to the center of the hallmark, flanked by the standard numeral on the right and assay office letter on the left. In January 2004 to date, all the remaining gold hallmarks were changed to match the style and frame shape of the 1997 3rd standard mark. Poland domestic gold marks 1920-1931 single -digit standard numbers; 1=960, 2=750, 3=583. Poland domestic gold marks 1931-1963 single -digit standard numbers; 1=960, 2=750, 3=583 and 4=375. Poland domestic gold marks 1963-1986; 1=960, 2=750, 3=583, 4=500 and 5=375.
