Are these French marks on Vernis Martin style box?
Are these French marks on Vernis Martin style box?
Hi Members
My latest box, are these French marks under rim on section that glues on to base?
If they are marks it seems a strange place to place them,as I would not have seen them if it had not come loose.
Kind Regards Guido.

Hi,
One of the marks (second from top) looks like Milano, Regno Lombardo Veneto, but really difficult to tell, just guessing based on the shape.

Hi Ag
Many thanks for your suggestion,They look like some sort of hallmarks to me, the silver blob I am not sure it mat have a mark in the center (very hard to tell mark). I cannot find much on Italian gold marks. From pre 1800 period.
Regards Guido

Re: Are these French marks on Vernis Martin style box?
I am not particularly interested in gold objects, but I must say that until now I have never seen an object with the Lombardo-Veneteo marks prescribed for gold.
I have an image, not of excellent quality, of the drawings
As for the Milan plow, I've seen hundreds of them, on pieces of silver, but I don't seem to recognize it in the second photo.
Regards
Amena

Re: Are these French marks on Vernis Martin style box?
Hi Amena
Many thanks for the information.
I agree that it is not the Milan plow mark,
As the box is French probably 1760-80 ,if they are marks, they are likely to be French marks.
I have done a drawing of one of a small mark ,that I have not posted before.
not sure if anyone will recognize it?
Regards Guido.

Re: Are these French marks on Vernis Martin style box?
Hi Members
I have found some images about marks on similar style boxes ,in the Wallace Collection London.
Looks like at least one of my marks may be what they call a wardens mark, even though not the same as my mark ,some of these marks seemed fairly plain, also spotted a V in the center of one mark ,that looked a little like my drawing.
Also read in the book that gold from this period was always marked, although as one expert pointed out with some unmarked pieces the marks may be hidden (underneath)not to be seen. As seems to be the case here. Image no 2 is the simple mark that I mentioned.
as you can see It looks like the gold mount is later replacement.
I do not think I will find the maker ,but at least now I feel they are hallmarks in my opinion.
Regards Guido

Re: Are these French marks on Vernis Martin style box?
Hello Members
I have discovered the painting on my box is after the original "The deer hunt"1725 by Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) There are some other recorded boxes in gold and vernis (painted) dated around 1750-58 with images after his paintings.
I have added some images and info.
all very interesting for me.
Regards Guido.
