makers mark JS on gold bangle

I have a 9ct gold bangle set with sapphires and pearls. The assay office is Birmingham and the date mark is 1903. The maker's mark is JS inside a shield. I deducted this as a piece made by Joseph smith and Sons from Birmingham. My query, however is that most reports on this, now ceased company is that they were not incorporated as a company until 1905 and that they primarily worked with silver. Does anyone have any further information about this company as I am interested to learn a bit about the history of this piece that belonged to my grandmother? Thank you.
