unknown silver-marks

Postby holger » Sat Jun 14, 2014 6:01 am

Hi,
my name is Holger. I'am an German Watchmaker.
On an early wristwatch-case I found some unknown silver-marks.

Therefore, the silver markers can be seen here.

The movement was made by swiss A. Schild SA in 1900...1910.

In which country the case has been made?

Thanks and regards
Holger

Hi Holger,

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm afraid these marks offer no clue to the country of of origin, as they are import marks only.

The marks were struck by the Glasgow Assay Office in 1915.

There should be another mark that identifies the importer, this may offer a clue.

Hi Trev,

first thanks for your reply. It does not help much, but it helps.

It can be found no other punches in the case.

The case respectively the wristwatch was so 1915 imported via Glasgow to Great Britain.

Is it possible that FW in an oval was manufacturer / wholesaler / importer of the wristwatch?

The manufacturer of the movement is undeniably more the Adolph Schild SA in Grenchen (Switzerland).

Unfortunately, there is the problem of missing punches of the manufacturing country on many watches - so even with watches of the International Watch Co.

The legal situation in Switzerland actually saw before that had to be provided every piece of precious metal prior to marketing with 3 punches.

For many watches that were exported to the UK this 3 punches but missing.

Why?

About the clarification of this problem, many watch collectors would be happy.

regards
Holger
