Help, re hallmark have looked ,everywhere

Postby nortonterry » Tue Jan 06, 2009 6:12 am

Hi I recently found what appears to be a silver locket with a horse shoe design on the front.
There is Hallmark on the back and has what appears to be 3 small anchors ( or possibly a W ) followed by an anchor lying on its side and a lion,
Underneath I think is the makers mark looks like C

The inside of the locket has again what appears to be 3 small anchors ( or possibly a W ) and the lion.

If anyone can shed some light on the date and original i would be very grateful

Thanks

Norton

Hi Norton,

Welcome to the Forum.

Start off by checking out Birmingham at:

Hi Trev

Thanks , I have looked on the website you suggested and still cannot see a sideways anchor or the three little anchors ( or maybe W ).
I undetstand that the lion means Birmingham but am a little confused about the other Hallmarks

Hello Norton,

It is one of the odd and little published facts that the Birmingham anchor was often struck on its side until the start of the 20th century. The mark on your piece is most likley to be 1896.

Paul.

Suggest may be an 'M' rather than a 'W' and without the duty mark is likely to be 1911-12. Anyone else?
