My great-grandfather, Ernest William Smith, was an English journalist/war correspondent. He published a French translation of Leo Tolstoy's "Knodite v svete", and also had a friendship with his daughter, Alexandra. The collection of his papers, which include Jules Verne, Sarah Bernhardt, Henrik Isben & Alexandre Dumas are archived at the University of Texas-Austin.
There are no marks which I am able to identify.
