Mark ID, something doesn't add up..

Postby Shifty » Sat Mar 29, 2008 6:19 am

I have this rather beautifully engraved pocket watch however I can't quite sort the exact details from the marks .. I know this is a bad photo and I've done my best going through the list on the site but there's one mark that doesn't seem to fit..
It has the shield with the 3 cornstacks? and sword which seems to be Chester.. Y/N ??
It has the Lion sterling silver Y/N??
Then there appears to be the letter I .. Now to my eyes I can't seem to distinguish one I from another on the ID charts...
That aside when I checked the makers stamp against those on the list for Chester it doesn't seem to appear there.. The makers stamp looks like HT, can anyone elaberate on this?? Also is there any reason why the makers stamp should be upside down, or at least appear to be so..
Also below the makers stamp are the numbers 3 1 on one line and under that 2 8 any ideas of what that could be???

Sorry about the poor image

Hi,

Chester Shield - Yes
Lion Passant - Yes - Sterling silver
Nothing wrong with the maker's mark being apparently upside down. The maker's mark will have been punched separately from the hallmarks. The marks look like Chester 1892 - no duty mark so after 1890. There was a Chester registered watch-maker with the mark "HT" - Henry Tarleton of Liverpool. He is dated at least between 1852 and 1871 so it could well be him, although its dfficult to be sure from the marks.

Sorry I can't help with the numbers - probably something to do with watch manufacture specifically.

Regards

Great, many thanks for that.. This was my great grandfathers watch and no one has the slightest idea of anything about it's origins..
I've tried searching google for any reference to that maker but can't find it, is there a place that you can direct me to find out anything more about Henry Tarleton?? It's a lo9vely watch, heavy as heck

The sponsor's mark looks like 'J.K.' to me.

I thought the same thing Salmoned.
That might be Jeremiah Kirk, 57 Butts, Coventry.
Henry Tarleton's HT mark was an incuse mark.

Pat.
