Silverplated? Photo shy

Postby DEBBIE AKKERMAN » Tue Sep 18, 2007 11:15 am

Hi Everyone,
I recieved this item from my mother. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the camers to focus enough on the marks (H&H with an eagles head next to it, and the numbers 19939 stamped under the H&H).

According to what I read on your site, it may be Heath and Hukin from Birmingham.??
Has anyone seen one of these before?
What sort of dishes or bowls belong in it?
How old is it etc. etc.

I hope someone can tell me something!!
Thanks in advance,
Debbie

Hello Debbie-
Try photographing the hallmarks anyway, for some great ideas on how to do it, see Wolfgang's notes, his pics are fantastic.

If nothing else, take a picture of the item its self, so we can see what your item is, so someone here may be able to tell you what it was designed to hold. Others here also may be able to identify the maker and or time period that way.

Best wishes- Byron

This is the best I can do for the moment.
Hope the photo comes up this time!
Thanks Debbie.

this is a pie stand for use at home and perhaps in a small cafe - we used to go to a restaurant in the middle of nowhere in Eastern Ontario where the hostess kept three or four pies in the rack - she also had a collapsible one.

Hi Debbie,

You simply place regular dishes with food on them (usually pies), but could also be sandwiches etc. Place it in the middle of the table so everyone can take from it what they want, like a high tea.
The only place I can think of that still uses them is the Cafe Americain in Amsterdam (in the Hotel Americain at the Leidse Plein).

Thanks very much for the tip, I'll have to get busy sorting out china saucers that fit!
I had a feeling that a certain type of dish, plate or bowl belonged with it.
Nice photo by the way.
Regards Debbie
