Just for the record, the website does not cover silverplate trademarks. If I've given the impression that it does, please let me know where I went off the track.
Thanks, Tom

Hello Tom-
I am very new to the world of sterling silver. However, isn't it true that many of the smiths also produced plated? Not knowing, would it not be a more comprehensive site if it included and differed the two?
If I remember correctly, you added gold, makes sense to add EPNS also.
Just a thought from us that cannot afford to collect sterling over plated.

What do you mean, it doesn't cover silverlate trade marks?. Isn't this the Silver Plate Trademarks Forum?

Byron,
It certainly would be more comprehensive if it also covered silverplate trademarks. I'll gladly turn to silverplaters when I am done with silversmiths, but that will most likely be many years away. Although some manufacturers worked in both areas, they did tend to use different marks for the different wares.

Paul,
The forum does have this little section on silverplate, but the main website (approx. 124 pages) carries virtually nothing on the subject.

Regards, Tom

During the past two months I've been helping moderate this discussion board. I never realized before how time consuming this whole website must have been for one person. Tom has his hands full improving the categories this site already has. I don't even want to think how many more British sterling marks there are.

American silverplate marks alone are a huge category. In my opinion this project is just too much to take on at this time.

Dorothy Rainwater's "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers" 4th edition has both silverplate and sterling marks.

Tom and Patrick-
I understand your point. The work that Tom puts in is most astounding and appreciated by all. I have also just remembered a past discussion about how many British silver smiths there would yet to be researched. I think the appx. outcome would be well over 20,000.
I think you are right Tom, you more than have your hands full. I would also like to thank Patrick, for his exceptional knowledge and help on this forum.

Best regards and thanks- Byron
