Silver Gravy Boats

Postby mary708157 » Sat Mar 31, 2007 8:18 am

Hi, This is my first post - I have two gravy boats I have looked at all the hallmark indexes and I can't identify them. These are the markings; HS-LD- S- EP. The "LD" the D is smaller and underlined and the "EP" is sideways also they are numbered (2232) both identical.

Here is a picture of both gravy boats - I was unable to take a picture of the hall marks because of reflection

Hello Mary.

Sounds like a set of British silverplate marks to me. The EP stands for Electroplated. The S probably stands for Sheffield. The "Ld" likely stands for limited.

Not sure, but that might be a silverplate mark used by Henry Stratford, Sheffield, England (1878-1930). The firm became Ltd. in 1900. From 1855 to 1878 the firm was known as William & Henry Stratford and used a WS over HS silverplate mark.

Regards,
Pat.

Thanks Pat for such a quick reply - It is brilliant to have an insight into the history of these items as they have been in our family for generations and I want to give my daughters one each. So I am glad to be able to tell them something about them. Thanks again, Mary.
