Sheffield Hallmarks on a serving spoon

Post by rosenthala »

Hello, can you please help me to identify these hallmarks. The first one I believe reads as "made in 1764".

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

You seem to be using an inappropriate photo hosting site for your picture. https://postimages.org is recommended (click 'Share', then copy and paste the 'Hotlink for forums' code to embed your images). Do not use Photobucket or Dropbox.

We will not need to see the date letter letter chart which you also seem to be trying to post.

Hi Phil, here is the link per your suggestion. How do I update the post with it?

Hello, I think there is a chance that you are going to be disappointed with with the outcome with your bit of cutlery and its marks. You have "Sheffield England" on the item meaning it is likely to have been made at the beginning of the 20th century. In fact there is a possibility of closer dating an item if it says "England" or "Made in England". The other marks are better called manufacturers marks and not "hallmarks" as there is no silver guarantee mark and this is a silver plate item. The 3 Gothic style letters should tell us the manufacturer. I hate Gothic letters but I think it is "JLG" but I do not recognise a manufacturing company from them. I am sure there will be some information from other Forum members. The number "58" may be a company pattern number or possibly a indicator for the amount of silver used in the plating process.
