Need help with identification of Swiss or German piece

This will be easy for you silver experts, I haven't a clue what I'm looking at.. :)

In the center back in a curved shape it reads A.OCH & LIN, second line reads SCHAFFHAUS. At either end is the same hallmark, it looks like a roman horse in a circle with either a castle or a coach being pulled next to it, under it are the letters A O and the numbers 1847.

This piece is supposedly a holy water font, but there is no way to attach it to the wall. It has two birds on the bottom facing each other, and it reads upside down if you hold it so it would contain water. The birds are also upside down if you hold it that way. If you hold it so the lettering and the birds are upright, it looks like a lid to something? Any help appreciated! Thanks!

I have seen these before in auctions and they were listed as holy water basins or stoups. They had the same mark as you describe. Sorry, but I believe your item is made of pewter. Can't identify the manufacturer.

Pat.
