Can't make out hallmark

Postby bitofapilchard » Wed Sep 23, 2015 3:48 pm

Hi

I'm struggling to make out what these marks are. It's on a vintage silver holder for a glass pyrex casserole dish. I think I can see the Birmingham anchor but I just can't work out the rest as the marks are quite faded. Many thanks for any help. Sorry, not the best photo.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

I hope I don't disappoint you too much, but the marks are the Gothic letters 'EPNS' (Electo Plated Nickel Silver).

Hi Trev,

Thank you for your reply. This is my uncle's pyrex and holder and he was sure it was sterling silver, but I actually had my doubts hence why I've posted it in here to double check.

So that's not an anchor at the front then. Is this British made? Google searches seem to come up with a lot of these dishes and holders in the US. I thought it said 'MADE IN ENGLAND' underneath but I wasn't sure.

See here for a clearer image of the mark: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_E.html

It does appear likely that the mark underneath is 'Made in England'.
