Makers mark and number. Please help

Hey, I found an inkwell in my grandfather belongings, which I believe he received as a service reward during or after ww1. However, I have been unable to identify the makers mark online. I also have no idea what the number 726 represents. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.

I don't recognise the mark, but the '726' would relate to a internal factory model, pattern or batch number. Such numbering was most commonly applied so that retailers could correctly re-order items.
