Sometime ago I acquired a teaspoon marked as shown in my picture.

I did a little research on the inter net looking for Federoid Stainless and CWS for makers names or trademark owner but all I found were a few ads on inter net selling sites for items so marked. Disappionted, I put my spoon back in the anonymous plated spoons box with the others.
Some while later just browsing “Silvercollection’s” lists of plate marks, as any normal person would do with a few minutes to spare, I found “Federoid Stainless and CWS in a diamond” shown as an unknown mark. Suddenly it came to me “CWS”, surely everybody in the UK who was born “b.c.” (before computers) knows thats the “Cooperative Wholesale Society”. Is that not so? Has my spoon, if not made by the “Cooperative”, been retailed by the “Society”? More research required.
Browsing various North East car boots I noted my spoon was not a rare find. Cutlery labelled “CWS” is easily found. Pictures of a couple more finds are shown below.

Back on the inter net I started to look for other linking references.
I found listed for sale together with an accompanying photo an “Old Tobacco Tin CWS 1oz Federation Flake”. A further find was that that during the 1920’s and 1930’s the Coop retailed and possibly built motorcycles and bicycles using the trade names “Federal” and “Federation” from their “Federal Works” in Birmingham.

The final useful evidence I found was an on line document (I do not know how to link to it) titled

CWS COLLECTION
STORED: PRINCESS STREET FORMER GALLERY
LIST
Updated:10 objects added to list on 21st May 2008.

The document was concluded with
Donna Puddepha
Leicester University MA Placement
March — May 2003

The document is just a long list of boxed items of Cooperative Wholesale Society “memorabilia” but includes

packaging, Federation Self Raising Flour; 31.50 x 11.40
flour sack, CWS Federation Plain Flour; 59.50 x 36.50
CWS Federation Self-Raising Flour; 26.00 x 19.50
and more interestingly for me
3 teaspoons, Federoid CWS Stain-Less; 12.60 x 2.60
soup spoon, CBS, Federal CWS Stainless; 19.50 x 5.00.

It seems obvious that the “Coop” extensively used “Federal”stemed trade names for their products and I think “Federoid Stain-less and CWS in a diamond” is an indication that my spoon, together with a very large amount of other cutlery, was at least retailed by the “Cooperative Wholesale Society” if not actually made by the “Coop”.
Maybe there are “Coop” knoledgable people on the forum who have any observations? Looking forward now to any comments.

p.s. Sorry about the huge first photo. Haven't worked out about getting exactly the correct size of photo uploaded yet.

Hi Fishless,

That's a great piece of research, thanks for sharing it with us.

(I've re-sized the first image).
