nielsen marks

Postby ducky188 » Tue Apr 04, 2006 5:22 pm

I have a spoon with the mark of a castle and under that is the number 12,
then the word NIELSEN and under that is a C over an F. The spoon is 5 1/4" long and the shallow bowl is 1 3/4" wide. I believe it is Dutch. Any help will be greatlly appreciated.

Sounds more like you have a piece of Danish silver rather than Dutch (look here under "Denmark" http://www.925-1000.com/foreign_marks.html). If the "castle" mark is three-towers over a "12", that would indicate it was assayed as at least 826/1000 fineness in 1912, if the "CF" is with an "H" in a circle, it's for Christian F. Heise, the Danish assay-master from 1904-32. Nielsen is a very common Danish surname, could be the maker or a retailer.
