2 Silver circular trays - R&H Gaiety - More info ?

Postby Knight » Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:34 pm

We have inherited 2 identical silver circular trays which have R&H Gaiety engraved on the rims. The rear has a hallmark with the following (as best we can make out, as they have been polished and worn down):

WH & S - certain
B - what looks like a heraldic B
P - what looks like a heraldic P

HARD SOLDERED is printed under the hallmark, and what looks like 2 sets of 4 arrows crossing diaganolly above the hallmark.

From research, we believe that the trays come from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Gaiety theatre, although we have no proof of that. Thanks in advance.

Your trays were made by William Hutton & Sons Ltd. of Sheffield. BP stands for British Plate, the company's own line of silverplate. Hutton started in the early 19th century and continues today (although it was taken over in the 1930s). Your trays are most probably late 19th or early 20th century.
