Markings on Covered Serving Dish

Postby dogcomp » Tue Feb 28, 2006 3:19 pm

I have a round covered serving dish with a glass insert divided into 3 sections. The lid has a horizontal black wood handle that is attached only on one end. The piece is about 8" in diameter. I have searched several sites and just can't figure out what these markings on this dish are Can anyone help? Sorry, but I can't get anything to take pictures of the markings. They're so faint, I'm not totally sure of my eyes, even. The first block has a mark that looks like the front half of a lion facing right with little circles beneath the lion. His front paws are showing, so I can't say its just the head. The second block has a "C", and the third block has what looks like a swan, or bird, or maybe even a dragon facing left. I called them blocks because each symbol has a square around it. The numbers 794 are stamped below the marks. There is also some very faint scratching of numbers upside down above the marks, but I can't make it out. Thanks so much for any info.

That might be a mark used by the Crescent Silverware Mfg. Company located in Port Jervis, New York since 1939. They were founded in 1922 in New York City. Sold to Samuel Kirk & Son in 1977.

Those are the markings exactly. Thanks so much. Do you know what they mean? Is this sterling silver or silver plate? Thanks again. dogcomp

If it does not say "Sterling", then presumably plate.

Since 1935 they only made silver plated holloware. In their early years they made some pewter and chrome plated items.
The figures in the first and last marks are sometimes refered to as dragons. Your description makes more sense to me but I'm really not sure what they were intended to represent.
