Unidentified Hallmark

Postby gspotts » Sat Dec 03, 2011 8:10 pm

I have a condiment stand, about 12" high, which was made by Martin and co which I believe is from Sheffield. Next to the makers mark is a serpent hallmark which I cannot find anywhere.

Hello,

No, not a snake, but part of the Gothic Blacklettering 'EPGS'. It's an abbreviation of 'Electro Plated German Silver', a term popularly used on plated wares.

German Silver was one of the many names used to describe the nickel alloy base metal. As a marketing term, it fell into disuse following the outbreak of the Great War.
